Follow the path of the two founders and experience how the dream of Mombacho Cigars became a reality
With two Canadian friends were backpacking through Central America, exploring the rich culture, history and geography of the region when they ended up spending a week in the picturesque colonial town of Granada.
The friends decided to take Spanish lessons at a local language school. Next door to this school was a small, family owned cigar factory that catered to a handful of private clients and also opened its doors to passersby. There they batch crafted cigars entirely by hand from age-old recipes passed down through generations.
The fellas would spend their recesses from school there each day, hanging out and getting to know the family. It was a warm, inviting atmosphere where the sweet cigars were conduits to captivating conversations.
As the days wore on and bonds were formed the cigar family introduced the boys to a special cigar from the back room. It was a naked, unbranded cigar made from a closely guarded family recipe that only a few had ever tasted. The cigar was exceptional; with a smooth, creamy smoke and snow white ash.
When Spanish classes ended so too did their time in Granada. The boys headed back to Toronto, arms loaded up with these exquisite cigars and souls filled with life changing experiences. For several months they reflected on their time in Nicaragua; how a simple visit to a cigar factory had opened up a new world to them. Here was this family, inviting a couple of strangers into their lives and sharing their stories and time with them. It was representative of their experience in Nicaragua in general, people with very little giving so much.
Some time later, the two friends, started inviting friends and family over for cigars, hoping to emulate their Nicaraguan experience. Hoping to slow time down for a few hours they would engage guests with cigars and perhaps a rum or two but most importantly, camaraderie and conversation. These sessions grew to be sought after affairs and soon the cigars were gone but the spirit remained; a lifestyle of luxuriating in good company and the slowness of time.
A few more months passed and the gnawing feeling of something missing would not pass. The two roommates would often recollect over their Nicaraguan adventures and pine to not just return but be able to share those kinds of moments with anyone, anywhere. Why couldn’t they return to Nicaragua and share these kinds of moments with anyone, anywhere?
In the spring of 2006 Cam and Markus returned to Granada with a plan that was quickly hatching. They visited their old cigar family friends and asked if they could share that exquisite creamy, smooth cigar with not only their friends and family, but the rest of the world as well.
The family readily agreed and a handshake sealed the deal. The boys commemorated the deal with a hike up the nearby majestic volcano Mombacho. It was at the top of this volcano, overlooking the city of Granada, where they stopped to enjoy a cigar where the name for the company struck them: Mombacho, which means “Mother of Our Land” in the indigenous language.
